One area that I was certainly skeptical of making a switch to greener alternatives was in cleaning products. I have used the same brands for years, which are more or less the same brands I recognize from my mom’s cleaning cabinet. The brand loyalty ran deep, my friends. But when Eric said he’d like to try Blueland, I said, “Ok, let’s give it a try.” He found the Blueland products for us, and we haven’t gone back.

What is Blueland?

From the Blueland website: “Blueland creates everyday eco-friendly cleaning products to save you money and space, without any plastic waste.” Essentially, Blueland produces dissolvable cleaning products (tablets and powders) and reusable bottles. Once your tablets and bottles arrive, you fill the bottle with water from your tap, add the tablet, and voila! You’ve got a bottle of cleaning solution without all the plastic waste of needing a new bottle each time you need more of the cleaning solution.

Blueland Products that we’ve tried

In our first order, we tried out the Multi-surface Starter Set, the Bathroom Starter Set, and the Glass and Mirror Starter Set. Let me tell you…I was impressed! It was very easy to fill the bottles. I liked that I wasn’t producing unnecessary plastic waste. 

It wasn’t long before I ran out of my usual toilet bowl cleaner and found myself asking Eric if Blueland sold tablets for that too. Needless to say, he quickly put in the order for me. 

Since we were putting in another order and were happy with what we had tried thus far, we decided to also get the dish detergent and the foaming hand soap. (Note: We do not have a dishwasher and wash all our dishes by hand.) All three of these products also wowed me. 

I think easily my favorite item is the foaming hand soap. This is where we really see the savings in plastic use. I was a little skeptical whether the hand soap would actually foam, but the glass container and pump create a foamy output that smells wonderful!

The extra, extra touch for me is that all of Blueland’s packaging is also environmentally friendly. If you’ve been following us, you know we have a backyard compost pile. The wrapping is compostable, the boxes are recyclable, and they even use paper tape on their boxes. Maybe you don’t compost, but you can still rest easy knowing that wherever your garbage ends up that the packaging from Blueland isn’t adding to the mound of plastic that’ll take decades to break down.

What was I waiting for?

What made it initially harder for me to feel committed to the switch to Blueland?

Well, as I said, I was a very brand loyal consumer of cleaning products. I knew which items were tough on grime but didn’t dry out my skin. Because I am the main person who creates the grocery list and picks up the groceries, it felt like switching to Blueland was going to be another step that I wasn’t eager to add to my routine.

When Eric  suggested that we make the switch, I told him that I wanted his help in ordering the items. He agreed that he would make our account and order for the first six months so that I didn’t feel a burden in having one more place to make an order when it seemed easier to me to add cleaning products to our weekly grocery order. Turns out, with the small size of the products from Blueland, we can order more or less in bulk so that we really only need to place an order no more than two, maybe three times a year. Everything is easy to store without taking up too much space in our small house.

In the end, it is actually less hassle for me than the traditional cleaning products were. We don’t have to order often, and I almost always have refills on hand when I run out.

What are you waiting for?

If, and that is a big if, you aren’t at least a little bit curious to try some of these items yourself, I can’t say enough about Blueland’s commitment to their product. We had one bottle nozzle that seemed to never quite squeeze correctly. We requested a replacement within 100 days of our initial purchase, and they quickly sent out the replacement. No hassles, no extra cost. They also offer free returns within 100 days if you are not satisfied. With that kind of policy, why wouldn’t you at least give their products a try? Take it from this brand-loyal gal, once you go Blueland, you won’t go back.
